Five things to love about the East Side
There are plenty of unique destination Attractions on our side of the valley

ARIZONA DAILY STAR
An 80-acre air and space museum, a park famous for its cave and a humor-filled theater are some of what makes Tucson's East Side unique.
Those places attract people from near and far to the East Side. Plus, the area has the city's only public-session roller skating rink and a rustic area central to Vail's history. Here's a look at five things that make the East Side stand out. It's not meant to be all-encompassing, as there's plenty more to see and do
1. Pima Air & Space Museum
6000 E. Valencia Road, www.pimaair.org, 574-0462.
The Pima Air & Space Museum has more than 275 aircraft on display. Among them is a Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird — currently known as the only manned, jet-powered aircraft to exceed Mach 3.
"We are sort of the Hard Rock Cafe of air museums. We love all and take all," said Scott Marchand, director of collections and aircraft restoration at the 80-acre museum.
The museum is normally only open during the day, but it's open late once a month during the summer for its Night Wings Program, when visitors can tour the museum and check out children's activities from 5 to 9 p.m. June 27, July 25 and Aug. 29. Program admission is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and younger.
Regular hours:9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with the last admittance at 4 p.m.
Regular summer admission (through October): $13.75 for adults, $11.75 for seniors, AAA members and military, $8 for ages 7 to 12 and free for children ages 6 and younger.
2. Skate Country
7980 E. 22nd St., www.skatecountry.com, 298-4409.
Indoor skating rinks certainly aren't a dime a dozen in Tucson.
The East Side is home to the city's only remaining rink with public skating sessions — Skate Country. (The West Side's Bladeworld Indoor Sports Center, 1065 W. Grant Road, has a rink but it's for sports such as roller hockey and roller derby.)
Skate Country has themed skate times including That '70s/'80s Skate from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Top 40 Night from 7 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 16, along with regular matinee and Cheap Skate sessions.
Plus, rink rats can skate from 1 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday with a $30 summer season pass that's good through Aug. 10.
Admission and hours: Vary by session. Go online to www.skatecountry.com to download the summer skating schedule.
3. Vail "Between the Tracks"
13105 E. Colossal Cave Road.
Five acres between two sets of railroad tracks are the roots of the modern Vail community.
"This has been the dot of Vail forever. We're trying to re-establish the sense of place," said Chauncey Kelley, who owns the Vail Food Store and the land between the tracks with his sister Patty Kelley. Their parents, Art and Mary Jane Kelley, started the store on the land in 1975.
During the 1920s, '30s and '40s, the area was the site of railroad families' houses, an ore dump, dances, the Shrine of St. Rita in the Desert and an old post office/general store, among other things, said J.J. Lamb, co-director of the Vail Preservation Society.
Some of the structures still stand. The society is working to preserve the old post office and have it placed on the National Register of Historic Places. St. Rita is still an active parish.
Along with the feed store, now the area is home to other businesses such as The Walker Agency of Farmers Insurance and Valeria's Comida Mexicana, as well as the preservation society's community-building events.
Go online to www.vailaz.com for historic photos of the area and other information.
4. The Gaslight Theatre
7010 E. Broadway, www.thegaslighttheatre.com, 886-9428.
Having finished its parody "Harlie's Angels" or "Clues But No Cigar," the Gaslight has moved on to spoofing superheros with its "The Freedom League of America."
The theater is an East Side fixture, encouraging audience participation and a good laugh in an Old West atmosphere.
The uniqueness of the environment is what makes the Gaslight stand out, said Becky Gilmour, the theater's director of public relations. She has been coming to the Gaslight since she was 6. "It's just a tradition for so many families," she said.
Along with its regular shows, the Gaslight hosts family concerts and youth theater.
Showtimes (of "Freedom League"): 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 and 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 and 7 p.m. Sundays. through Aug. 22.
Tickets (plus tax):$17.95 for adults, $15.95 for students, seniors age 60 and older and military and $7.95 for children ages 12 and younger.
5. Colossal Cave Mountain Park
16721 E. Old Spanish Trail, www.colossalcave.com, 647-7275.
Best known for the cave that extends 600 feet or so into the mountain, Colossal Cave Mountain Park includes a working cattle ranch with hay rides, hiking trails and La Posta Quemada Ranch and the Civilian Conservation Corps museums.
"It's one of the few places outside of Tucson where you can drive a short distance — like half an hour, 45 minutes — and you can get into totally primitive, non-developed areas, naturalist areas," said Lauren Hohl, assistant manager and an education assistant.
The park has special events the fourth Saturday and first Sunday of each month. Go online to its Web site or call 647-7121 for more information.
Regular tours of the cave run several times daily. People can register in advance to take more vigorous tours through infrequently traveled areas.
Summer hours (to Sept. 15):8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Admission:The daily park use fee is $5 per auto, or $1 per person for autos with more than six passengers. Go online to view other vehicle rates. Cave tours are $11 for ages 13 and older, $6 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for ages 4 and younger.
