· New farmers market begins direct, fresh sales at Legion
American Legion McCulloch-Wagner Post 109 held its first farmers market last Friday.
Just a few booths were set up in the parking lot of the legion, 15921 S. Houghton Road, but organizers hope to lure more vendors through word of mouth and advertising.
"We will get the word out and get the community involved," said Jackie Hall, with the Doc Kendrick Spice Co.
The community aspect of farmers markets appeals to her.
"You actually talk to the people who grow or manufacture the products," Hall said. "It's more of a personal connection - you can trust where your food and products come from."
For Jackie Salter-Miller, who helped organize the event, it's a way to bring the business to the people.
She's optimistic about the market's prospects.
"Even though there aren't a lot of vendors here now, this is the first one," Salter-Miller said. "We are going to grow."

HSSA filled to capacity with cats Late Influx Spurs Special Adoption Fee
A decline in the number of cats and kittens is typical by November, but due to the warm fall weather HSSA is still receiving unusually large numbers of homeless cats. The delay in cold temperatures has given many cats the opportunity to breed one more time, sending hundreds of unwanted felines to our shelter. The Humane Society believes that a large number of unspayed and unneutered cats in our community, combined the current economic crisis are the reason behind the dilemma.
In order to find these lovable cats and kittens homes before the new year, HSSA is giving Tucsonans the chance to adopt two cats for the price of one until the end of December!
During this special promotion, feline fanatics can take home two purring bundles of joy for the price of one. Despite this deep discount, both pets will go home spayed or neutered, tested for feline leukemia and treated for internal and external parasites. The newly-adopted pets will also go home with current vaccinations, a sturdy cardboard carrier and is eligible for a free visit to a local veterinarian of your choice. Remember, two cats can offer twice the pleasure and twice the fun, and they’re often half the work because they keep each other company.
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona advises against giving pets as holiday gifts. If your family does decide to adopt a furry friend this season, please look for your newest addition—with your entire family—at the shelter located at 3450 N. Kelvin Blvd. There you will find loving pets in all shapes and sizes, breeds and colors, and the dedicated and experienced staff at HSSA will help you find the best friend who is best for you and your family.
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona is open from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday Saturday and noon to 5:00pm on Sundays.
Ongoing Community Food Drive - Corona De Tucson Fire Department
The Littletown Food Bank is a satellite of the Community Food Bank and is staffed by local volunteers. It is located at 6365 S. Craycroft just north of the Triple T Truck stop on Craycroft on the East side of the street. They are very short on food right now, as they get much of their food from the Tucson branch and there isn't much food there to pass around. They take nonperishable items and can also take money. They have agreements with local stores to distribute baked goods and produce as well. They are open from 8 am to noon, Monday to Friday. This food bank, although small, is easier for people in need in the Vail/Corona area to reach than are the ones in town. Food may be dropped off at the food bank during their hours of operation, or can be left at the Corona de Tucson Fire Department at 99 Tallahassee Dr. in Corona. The Firefighters deliver food regularly to the food bank.
